It's Not About Whether You Can Do It. It's About Whether You Should

It's Not About Whether You Can Do It. It's About Whether You Should

As the summer is about half over, I'm reminded of how different summer felt when we were kids.

Summer seemed endless. School was out, responsibilities were few, and our days were filled with bike rides, camp, vacations, and long afternoons outside. There was a sense of freedom that came with knowing there was time to simply enjoy life.

Fast forward to adulthood, and summer often feels very different.

We're balancing careers, businesses, families, appointments, responsibilities, and never-ending to-do lists. Taking even a week off can feel like a luxury, let alone two.

This year, I've intentionally built three extended breaks into my calendar. Earlier this year, my son and I traveled to Europe. As you read this, I'll be enjoying our annual two-week vacation in Vermont, and later this fall I'll spend two weeks in Italy.

Those trips aren't simply vacations.

They're investments.

They allow me to recharge, reconnect with the people I love, and return to my life and my business with fresh energy and creativity.

Life Doesn't Stop Just Because You're Leaving

Of course, life doesn't magically become simple before vacation.

In fact, the week before I left was full of unexpected challenges, car issues, school issues, weather issues, and all the little surprises that seemed to arrive all at once.

Years ago, that would have left me feeling completely overwhelmed.

Today, my planning systems make all the difference.

That doesn't mean I plan every minute of every day. It simply means I have enough structure in place that when life gets messy, I already know what comes next.

For example, packing has become a simple system. I check the weather, pack layers for different temperatures, include a few backup options, and trust that I'll have everything I need.

Done.

No last-minute panic.

No unnecessary stress.

Progress Doesn't Have to Stop When You Do

One of the biggest projects I'm working on right now is a complete refresh of my website.

Over the past weeks, I've spent hours refining the messaging, organizing the content, and making sure everything reflects exactly how I want my business to serve people moving forward.

Now comes the best part.

I handed it off.

My website designer will handle the implementation while I'm enjoying vacation.

The same is true for a new resource I'm creating, the Sustainable Success Scorecard. I've developed the content and mapped out the vision, but my virtual assistant team will build the landing pages and put all the technical pieces together.

That means progress continues while I'm away.

Not because I'm working from vacation.

Because I've built a team that can carry the work forward.

The Better Question

So often, we ask ourselves:

"Can I do this?"

Can I build the landing page?

Can I update the website?

Can I manage every detail myself?

The answer is probably yes.

But I think there's a better question.

Should I?

Just because you're capable doesn't mean you're the best person to do every task.

Some work belongs in your zone of genius.

Other work belongs in someone else's.

When you delegate the right things, you create space to do the work only you can do, and to enjoy the life you've worked so hard to build.

Give Yourself Permission

As we head into the final weeks of summer, I'd encourage you to ask yourself one simple question:

What am I holding onto simply because I know I can do it?

Is it something only you can do?

Or is it something you could confidently hand to someone else?

Sometimes the greatest gift we give ourselves isn't learning another skill.

It's giving ourselves permission to let go.

Because success isn't about doing everything.

It's about doing the right things.

As always, what I hope for you is that you live a life you love without giving up the things that bring you joy.
