You Don’t Have to Choose Between Wellness and Enjoying Your Life

You Don’t Have to Choose Between Wellness and Enjoying Your Life

One of the biggest wellness myths out there is this idea that you have to choose.

Choose between:

  • Being healthy or having fun

  • Taking care of yourself or enjoying great food

  • Wellness or travel

  • Structure or spontaneity

And honestly?

I don’t believe that’s true at all.

Right now, I’m writing this from the beautiful Douro Valley in Portugal after an incredible day filled with:

  • A river cruise

  • A tour of Aveiro

  • A winery lunch

  • Amazing conversations

  • Beautiful scenery

  • Delicious food and wine

And no, I didn’t “fall off track.”

Because wellness isn’t about restriction.

It’s about balance.

Wellness Should Support Your Life, Not Shrink It

I think sometimes people assume wellness means saying no to everything enjoyable.

No wine.
No desserts.
No travel.
No flexibility.

That kind of approach may work temporarily…

But, it isn’t sustainable long term. And it isn’t any fun!

Life is meant to be lived.

And one of the things I teach my clients all the time is:
👉 Your wellness routine should support your life, not make your life smaller.

A Little Planning Makes a Huge Difference

Now, balance doesn’t happen accidentally.

It takes a little bit of planning.

For example, today started early:

  • Bus ride at 8:00 AM

  • River cruise

  • Walking tour

  • Winery lunch not until 2:00 PM

And I already knew:
If I waited that long to eat, I’d end up starving, exhausted, and hangry.

So what did I do?

I packed a little food to bring with me.

Simple.

Not complicated.
Not restrictive.

Just intentional.

Balance Isn’t About Perfection

Then when we arrived at the winery?

I fully enjoyed the experience.

Fresh cheeses.
Olives.
Salads.
Turkey.
Roasted potatoes.
Rice.
Beautiful local wines.

And because the meal was served family-style, everyone could choose what worked best for them.

That’s what balance looks like.

Not guilt.

Not all-or-nothing thinking.

Just mindful choices that allow you to enjoy the moment and feel good afterward.

The Goal Isn’t “Having It All”

Now, I’m not going to sit here and tell you that you can “have it all.”

I think that phrase creates unrealistic expectations.

But I do believe you can create:

  • Better balance

  • Better health

  • More joy

  • More meaningful experiences

And usually, it starts with asking:
👉 What actually matters to me?

Joy Matters Too

This trip has reminded me again how important joy is for our wellness.

Not just nutrition.

Not just exercise.

But joy.

Connection.
Adventure.
Experiences.
Good conversations.
Beautiful places.
Trying something new.

Those things nourish us too.

Wellness Isn’t Just About What You Avoid

It’s also about what you intentionally include.

And for me?
That absolutely includes:

  • Travel

  • Great meals

  • Local experiences

  • Sharing moments with people I care about

Those things make life richer.

Your Challenge This Week

Ask yourself:

👉 What could you plan better so you could enjoy life more fully?
👉 Where are you making things harder than they need to be?
👉 What would balance actually look like for you?

Not perfection.

Not extremes.

Just balance.

Because in the end, I think that’s what most of us really want:

  • Better health

  • More joy

  • More peace

  • A life we genuinely enjoy living

As always, what I hope for you is that you live a life you love without giving up the things that bring you joy.
