Surviving the Dog Days of Summer: Tips for Staying Cool, Healthy, and Happy

The hazy, hot, and humid weather we call the dog days of summer can leave us feeling drained and unmotivated. You might have plans to get out and enjoy the sunshine, but sometimes the heat just makes you want to stay inside and do nothing. So, what can you do on days like that to still take care of yourself and find joy? Let’s get back to basics.

Hydration: The Foundation of Summer Wellness

Staying hydrated is crucial in the hot weather. Always carry a water bottle with you. I love adding electrolytes to mine. Electro is my favorite electrolyte mix, packed with electrolytes and antioxidants that help me stay hydrated and feel good. You can also add a pinch of Himalayan salt and a squeeze of lemon or lime to your water. If you prefer flavored options, be mindful of sugar content. I love that Electro only has two grams of sugar and no artificial sweeteners. Whatever you use, make sure you’re reading your labels!

Nourishing Foods for Hot Days

When it's sweltering, the thought of cooking might be unbearable. Try some meals that don’t require heating. A chilled shake in the morning is refreshing and nutritious. Prepare food the night before when it's cooler that you can enjoy cold the next day. Think cold chicken, salmon, salads, or even ceviche—a delicious dish where the seafood is “cooked” in citrus juice.

Pair it with fresh veggies for a perfect PFC (protein, fat, carbs) meal without turning on the stove.

Movement: Staying Active Despite the Heat

Exercise is important, even on hot days. If outdoor activities are too daunting, consider alternatives like walking in an air-conditioned mall or hitting the gym. If you prefer being outdoors, try to exercise early in the morning or later in the evening when the temperatures are cooler. Remember, the key is to keep moving.

Rest: Creating a Cool Sleep Environment

A good night's sleep is essential for recharging. It's hard to sleep well if you're hot and sticky, so make sure your sleeping environment is cool and comfortable. Use fans, air conditioning, or breathable bedding to create a restful space.

Managing Stress: Keeping Your Cool

Keeping your stress level low is part of feeling good in any season. Sticking to your basics: hydration, nourishing foods, movement, and good sleep are simple habits that can help keep your stress in check and ensure you’re ready to tackle the day, no matter how hot it gets.

Looking Ahead:

Before you know it, the dog days of summer will be over, and we'll welcome the cool mornings of sweatshirt weather. Our routines will shift as we move past Labor Day and into fall, but for now, let's enjoy the warmth and the sun.

Remember, you have all the skills to stay cool and healthy during these hot summer days.

As always, my wish for you is to live a life you love without feeling hungry, deprived, or giving up the things that bring you joy. Stay cool and enjoy the rest of your summer!
