What to Do When Life Shows Up: Lessons from a Not-So-Planned Vacation

Back from a couple of weeks in Vermont, I can’t help but reflect on how different things were just a week ago. Back then, I was feeling under the weather—turns out it was walking pneumonia! After a few clinic visits and a round of antibiotics, I’m finally on the mend, though healing will take some time. This wasn’t the vacation I had planned, but it’s given me a lot to think about, especially when it comes to what we do when life throws us curveballs.

When Life Shows Up

We’ve all been there. You have everything planned out—whether it’s a vacation, a big work project, or a family event—and then, out of nowhere, life happens. Maybe you get sick, a family member needs help, or something completely unexpected pops up. The truth is, life will always find a way to surprise us. The real challenge isn’t in the surprise itself, but in how we respond to it.

Notice I said respond and not react. It’s easy to get caught up in our initial reactions—feeling frustrated, disappointed, or even angry when things don’t go as planned. I had packed my pickleball gear, brought along my favorite wine, and had visions of outdoor fun and socializing. None of that happened, and yes, I could have thrown a tantrum about it. But instead, I chose to pivot.

Pivoting and Plan Bs

When the weather kept us indoors, we pulled out the board games and made the best of it. When the bonfire was cut short due to lightning, we found other ways to enjoy the evening. Having a good Plan B is crucial, and it’s something I’ve learned to embrace over the years.

So, my challenge to you is this: Don’t just plan for what you want to happen. Think about how you’ll respond when things don’t go according to plan. It’s not a matter of if life will show up—it’s when. And when it does, how you respond can make all the difference.

Life is unpredictable, but that’s what keeps things interesting.
