Movement Isn’t Just About Fitness, It’s About Mental Health Too

Did you know May is Mental Health Awareness Month?

It feels fitting because this month I’ve been talking a lot about the basics,  the foundational things we do to take care of ourselves so we can show up fully for our lives, our families, our businesses, and the people we love.

And one of the biggest basics?

Movement.

Not punishment.
Not “earning” your food.
Not trying to force yourself into some unrealistic version of wellness.

Just movement that helps you feel more alive.

The Basics Matter More Than We Think

You’ve heard me talk about the basics before:

  • Food

  • Movement

  • Hydration

  • Sleep

  • Stress management

  • Supplements or medications when needed

These are the things that support everything else.

When they’re neglected, life feels harder.

When they’re supported, everything flows better, mentally, emotionally, physically, and even professionally.

My Reminder This Week

Normally, I record my videos earlier in the day.

But this week, I had a session scheduled with my trainer and I had a choice:

Rush through the video…

Or take care of myself first.

So I chose the workout.

And afterward?

I came back with:

  • More energy

  • A clearer mind

  • A better attitude

  • More excitement to work

That’s the power of movement.

It Doesn’t Have to Be Extreme

This is the part I really want people to hear:

You do not have to do intense workouts for movement to positively impact your mental health.

Sometimes it’s:

  • A walk outside

  • Dancing in your kitchen

  • Stretching

  • Playing pickleball

  • Going to a class with a friend

  • Walking around the house on a rainy day

The “best” movement is the one you’ll actually enjoy enough to keep doing.

Movement Changes More Than Your Body

Regular movement changes:

  • Your mood

  • Your focus

  • Your energy

  • Your resilience

  • Your outlook

And when those things improve?

Everything else in your life improves too.

That’s why movement is so much bigger than fitness.

It’s mental wellness.

Joy Is Part of Wellness Too

As I’m writing this, I’m getting ready for my upcoming trip to Portugal and Spain.

You can probably see the travel prep already beginning:
chargers, water bottles, planning lists…

And honestly?

That trip is good for my mental health too.

Not because it’s “productive.”

But because it fills me up.

What Makes You Feel Alive?

For me, that looks like:

  • Walking through a new city

  • Cooking classes

  • Visiting wineries

  • Great meals

  • Time with my son

  • Exploring somewhere different

Those experiences light me up.

And that matters.

Because wellness isn’t just about avoiding illness.

It’s about creating a life that feels meaningful and joyful to live.

Mental Health Isn’t Built From One Big Thing

It's built from small things done consistently.

A walk.
A conversation.
A little sunshine.
A hobby.
A workout.
A trip you’re excited about.

Those things matter.

More than most people realize.

Your Challenge This Week

Ask yourself:

👉 What kind of movement actually makes me feel good?
👉 What activities make me feel more alive?
👉 What brings me energy instead of draining it?

Then go do more of that.

Not perfectly.

Not all at once in a frenzy.

Just intentionally.

As always, what I hope for you is that you live a life you love without giving up the things that bring you joy.
