Maintaining Balance With a Full Calendar

Do you ever feel like you’re walking on a tightrope in life, just trying to stay steady to keep from falling off? Balance is important, and when our balance gets off center, falling off that tightrope is a given.

My balance recently went completely out the window for a week, so my to-do list became a mile long, and I had to stop and figure out how I was going to get it all accomplished. I had to pause, take a breath, and consider what happened that the balance in my life was completely off kilter?

School starting last month introduced a new routine for my family, and after adding in after school activities, homework, and my kiddo’s part-time job, my schedule was already pretty busy. To add to that, I signed up for a 14-day business accelerator course, and I’m launching new products all around the world.

My life started looking like one long series of “and, and, and…” before I knew it, and that’s how I woke up one day with a to-do list that seemed impossible. However, I did manage to cross everything off eventually.

Today, I want to share how you can do the same if you feel like your plate is too full to balance.

  1. Take a deep breath.

You may feel too busy to even think about taking time to breathe, but before you jump into your tasks, clearing your mind with a deep breath may be what helps hold you together to get it all done. Start with a breath to prepare for what’s to come. Or two. Or three.

  1. Get everything on paper.

Thoughts of chores that seem jumbled and endless in your mind may just seem a little clearer on paper. Take a look at your calendar, figure out where you can fit in time to get things done, and cross off tasks that aren’t crucial. Seeing your tasks on paper makes it a little easier to create a plan to tackle each and every chore.

I let myself get so busy that I skipped some of my daily walks, and that’s something I’m not okay with. Now my walks get put on the calendar, and no matter what’s going on around me, I make the time and effort to fit them in. Sure, it may mean that I have to skip some minor task, or even make phone calls while I’m out walking, but getting that walk in with little compromises is always going to be better than not getting it in at all.

  1. Learn how and when to say no.

Many of us are the type to want to be able to do everything, but the reality is that we just don’t have the bandwidth to complete every little task presented to us. As hard as it is, we have to learn to prioritize and find out what we’ll simply have to say no to. You may feel guilty at first, but being honest about what we just can’t fit in our schedules is important to maintaining the balance in our lives.

My life gets crazy busy just as everyone’s does sometimes, but breathing, prioritizing, and being honest about when to say no makes it possible for me to stay balanced.
