Learning to Listen

When we think of all the things that make someone “healthy,” we might think of things like cooking healthy meals and exercising at the gym. Health seems very actionable, and it’s all about doing and making.

It’s true that what we actively do for our body makes a huge difference in the state of our health, so the decisions we make are really important. But there’s another aspect of health that’s just as important as the things we do. It’s stopping the “doing” and giving ourselves time to rest.

When you’re excited about getting healthy and anxious to start making moves to improve your health, resting may seem a little underwhelming. But when we constantly have our body on-the-go, we’ll pay the price pretty quickly for choosing to leave rest out of our routine.

I'll be honest: it’s tough to make time for rest when you have a full schedule. Recently, I woke up a little hoarse and had to put the brakes on my plans for the day. I had plans to do my weekly Facebook Live, get some work done, and exercise that day, but my body had other plans for me. Instead, I spent the day drinking lots of tea, resting, and keeping my FB Live very short. I had an event coming up that weekend that I needed to heal for, so I made rest my priority for that day and the next one.

Sometimes, we need to step back from our agendas and ask our body what it needs from us.

Sometimes, your body may tell you it needs rest, or socialization, or more movement, or healthier food. If we listen to our body, it will tell us if what we’re doing each day is serving us, or if we maybe need to tweak our routines to help ourselves in the long run.

If you want to make changes to keep your body happy and healthy for years to come, I would love to help you make a plan that works for your lifestyle. Let me know in the comments!
