Surviving the Dog Days of Summer: Hydration Tips and Tricks

If you’re in New England or anywhere in the Northeast, you’re probably feeling the heat of the dog days of summer. You know, those hazy, hot, and humid days where stepping outside feels like walking through molasses. In this heat, staying hydrated is crucial.

Why Hydration is Key

When it’s hot and humid, your body loses fluids quickly through sweat, and replenishing these fluids is essential. However, many people find it challenging to drink enough water, sometimes because they don’t like the taste. Let’s talk about how to make hydration easier and more enjoyable.

Simple Hydration Tips

  1. Electrolytes: Adding electrolytes to your water can make it more palatable and help replace essential minerals lost through sweat. Just be mindful of the artificial sweeteners that some electrolyte powders contain.

  2. Aminos: Start your day with water infused with amino acids. They are the building blocks of protein and essential for your body. They come in a variety of flavors. My favorites are  watermelon, lime, mixed berry, and mango.

  3. Herbal Infusions: Add fresh herbs to your water. Mint, basil, and rosemary can be great choices. Use a sachet or cheesecloth to avoid loose leaves in your drink. Muddling the herbs a bit will release their flavors and essential oils.

  4. Fruit Flavors: Infuse your water with fruits like lemon, lime, strawberries, or blueberries. Remove the rind from citrus fruits to avoid bitterness and potential pesticides.

  5. Herbal Teas: Herbal teas are a great way to stay hydrated. Be cautious with caffeinated teas as caffeine is a diuretic and can dehydrate you, having the opposite of your intended effect.

Hydrating Foods

In addition to drinking water, you can increase your hydration through the foods you eat:

  • Fruits: Watermelon, citrus fruits, and berries are all high in water content.

  • Vegetables: Cucumbers, tomatoes, etc. are excellent choices for hydration.
