How to Actually Shift Your Mindset

We've been talking about mindset all month long, but today I want to answer the question I hear most often.

"Okay, Dawn... but how do I actually shift my mindset?"

It's a fair question.

People often say things like "Think positively," or "Change your mindset," but they rarely explain what that actually looks like in everyday life. It can sound inspiring, but not very practical.

So today, I want to share three simple ways you can begin making that shift.

1. Give Your Mind Something Better to Repeat

Last week, I talked about using a mantra, one simple sentence that you intentionally repeat to yourself each morning and each evening.

Mine is:

"Everything works out for me, even better than I expected."

Your mantra doesn't have to be mine. Maybe yours is:

  • Today is a good day.

  • I can figure this out.

  • Every day I'm getting stronger.

  • I have everything I need for today.

The exact words aren't nearly as important as the consistency and the positive intent.

Our brains naturally repeat whatever we feed them. If we're constantly replaying worries, fears, or negative assumptions, those become the soundtrack running in the background all day long.

Choosing a positive statement gives your mind something new to practice.

It doesn't have to be permanent, either. Your mantra can change as your life changes. The important part is choosing something that helps move your thinking in the direction you want to go.

2. Be Clear About What You're Trying to Change

One of the biggest mistakes people make is trying to change everything at once.

"I want to improve my health."
"I want my business to grow."
"I want better relationships."
"I want more energy."
"I want more confidence."

Those are wonderful goals, but trying to tackle all of them simultaneously usually leads to overwhelm.

Instead, choose one area.

Ask yourself:

Where do I most need a mindset shift right now?

Maybe it's around money.

If your thoughts constantly revolve around not having enough clients or not making enough income, your attention stays fixed on what's missing.

What if you shifted your focus instead?

What if you spent that same energy thinking about your favorite client? What made working with them so rewarding?

Where might you find more people like them? Who could introduce you to someone who needs your help?

Notice the difference.

You're no longer focusing on scarcity. You're focusing on opportunity.

That's what shifting your mindset really means. It isn't pretending problems don't exist. It's choosing to spend more mental energy on solutions than on limitations.

3. Change Your Environment

Sometimes your thoughts don't change because nothing around you changes.

If you've been sitting at the same desk for hours feeling frustrated or stuck, your environment may actually be reinforcing those feelings.

One of the simplest ways to interrupt that cycle is to move.

You don't necessarily have to stop working.

Take your laptop to the dining room table.

Work from your patio.

Visit your favorite coffee shop.

Take a walk before returning to your desk.

Even changing rooms can give your brain a fresh perspective.

Personally, I love working somewhere with a little bit of life happening around me. There's a Little League field near my house, and sometimes just watching kids play baseball reminds me that life is bigger than whatever problem I'm trying to solve.

A small change in scenery can create a surprisingly big shift in your thinking.

Start Small.

Whenever I'm working with clients, we don’t try to change everything overnight.

We start where they are.

We make one positive change.

Then another.

Then another.

Your mindset deserves the same approach.

You don't have to become a completely different person this week.

Choose one positive thought.

Choose one area to focus on.

Choose one small change to your environment.

That's enough.

Small, consistent shifts create lasting transformation.

So this week, ask yourself:

What is one thing I can do today to shift my mindset in a positive direction?

Start there.

As always, what I hope for you is that you live a life you love without giving up the things that bring you joy.
