Why Should We Care About Air Quality?

Why Should We Care About Air Quality?

You might be wondering, "Why should I care about air quality?"

It's easy to overlook this invisible aspect of our environment. However, with the recent surge in devastating wildfires wreaking havoc on the air quality in many parts of North America, understanding its significance becomes more important than ever.

As someone who values a healthy and balanced lifestyle, I believe it's essential to delve into why air quality matters and how it can impact our well-being.

As a mother, I prioritize the health of my loved ones. My son developed asthma after having pneumonia as a child, and he has become sensitive to certain allergens. I've advised him to be cautious and avoid engaging in vigorous outdoor activities when the air is filled with particulates from wildfires. Instead, we encourage him to work out indoors using equipment like the Peloton or a Treadmill, minimizing the negative impact on his lungs and potential future health complications.

But what lies beneath these atmospheric changes?

What happens when we breathe in the air laden with particles from the wildfires?

Let's talk about the hidden dangers these particles pose to our respiratory system and our bodies as a whole.

During wildfires, particles are released into the air, some of which are so fine that they are invisible. When we inhale the smoky air, these particles find their way into our lungs and bloodstream, triggering inflammation. Our bodies recognize them as foreign substances and mount an immune response, leading to inflammation. Constant inflammation can significantly impact our immune system's functionality and our body's ability to function optimally. From a digestive system impact, we might experience bloating, puffiness, and unexplained weight gain. But beyond these immediate effects, long-term inflammation serves as a precursor to chronic diseases. Many of the chronic conditions we face today are caused by systemic inflammation.

Another factor that can exacerbate inflammation in our bodies is the food we consume. While people may react differently to various foods, some common culprits known to cause inflammation include gluten, dairy, soy, refined sugars, and artificial sweeteners. When combined with environmental factors such as poor air quality, we increase our risk of developing chronic diseases over the long term.

Now, I don't delve into the deep, geeky, science frequently, but these are the aspects I constantly consider and work on with my clients. This is why we discuss reducing your inflammatory profile, not only through food choices but also by considering environmental factors.
